Merchtem Cats Roar into 2026: A High-Octane Pre-Season Awaits
As the winter frost begins to fade, the crack of the bat and the pop of the glove are returning to Sportcomplex Dooren. Merchtem Cats Baseball & Softball Club is gearing up for an ambitious 2026 pre-season for both sports.With international matchups, mixed-roster collaborations, and the return of the beloved Cats Cup [softball], the schedule is packed with top-tier action designed to test every player’s mettle before the regular season officially begins.
Baseball: Mixing Talent for International Tests
This year, the Baseball department is taking a "stronger together" approach. The rosters for Division 1 and Division 2 will be mixed during the pre-season, allowing veterans and rising talents to find their rhythm in the early spring.
The schedule is particularly demanding, featuring matchups against legendary Dutch clubs:
March 14-15 | vs. HCAW (Home): The Cats open their campaign by hosting HCAW from Bussum. As a three-time Dutch champion club, HCAW brings a level of play that will immediately set a high bar for the Merchtem squad.
March 22 | at Zottegem (Away)
March 28-29 | at Haarlem Sparks (Away): The Cats travel to Noordersportpark in the Netherlands. Facing the Sparks in the heart of Dutch baseball territory, a great test.
April 04 or 05 | Intrasquad Game: The club will hold an internal showdown. It’s "Cat vs. Cat" in a friendly but fierce battle before Opening Day
Softball: Tournaments and the "Cats Cup"
The Softball teams are hitting the road early to find their competitive edge, facing diverse international and local opponents.March 14-15 | Tournament at Andenne Black Bears: The D1 ladies head to Buck’s Park for a tournament. They will face a gauntlet of Belgian D1/D2 teams, a premier French D1 squad, and a formidable D2 team from the Netherlands.
March 21 | D3 Tournament at MSG Phoenix: D3 will play on Phoenix’s renowned turf field, competing in a tournament featuring several Wallonian clubs.
Early April | The Cats Cup: The first weekend of April is marked for the return of the Cats Cup in Merchtem. This flagship event is more than just a series of games; it’s a celebration of the club’s community and a final tune-up in 2026.
A Tradition of Growth
Founded in 1985, the Merchtem Cats have grown into a powerhouse of Belgian baseball. With over 200 members and modern facilities, the club continues to prioritize both high-level competition and a welcoming "family" atmosphere. In 2026, the club will use Jamie Flynn as its Sporting Director to continue the traditions of the past while also enriching them to realize a brighter future in baseball and softball.
